Did you know until 1996, nobody knew where spectacled eiders went in the winter?

When they left their breeding grounds in Northern Alaska at the end of summer, it was unclear where they went. Research by Margaret Petersen discovered that they would head out into the Bering Sea, forming huge flocks around gaps in the ice. They spend the long, dark winter diving as far as 250ft underwater to pull clams and other invertebrates off the sea floor.

This drawing is perfect for birdwatchers, bird ringers, nature lovers, fans of sea ducks!
